چکیده

Clavulanic acid reduced the MICs of amoxicillin, carbencillin , cefamandole, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftizoxime, cephalothin, and penicillin G, but not of cefoxitin or moxalactam, against 77 isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group, all rapidly beta-lactamase positive by the nitrocefin slide test. It had no effect on the susceptibilities of eight Bacteroides distasonis strains that were slowly beta-lactamase positive (18 h of incubation).

Combined antibacterial activity of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid against ampicillin-resistant strains.

Strains of bacteria resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics have been increasing in number and are becoming troublesome in clinical medicine. The in vitro antibacterial activity of amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid was determined on selected ampicillin-resistant clinical isolates. Synergistic effects were produced by amoxicillin with clavulanic acid against ampicillin-resistant strains of ...

Comparative in vitro activities of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and imipenem against anaerobic bacteria isolated from community hospitals.

The susceptibilities of recent clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria from two community hospitals were determined. Thirty percent of pigmented Bacteroides species and bile-sensitive, nonpigmented Bacteroides species produced penicillinase and were resistant to amoxicillin. Cefoxitin and clindamycin showed good activity against most strains, with the exception of rare isolates of the Bacteroid...

Comparison of the inoculum effect of cefoxitin and other cephalosporins and of beta-lactamase inhibitors and their penicillin-derived components on the Bacteroides fragilis group.

We compared the inoculum effects for 109 recent clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group of cefoxitin, cefotetan, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, and three beta-lactamase inhibitors (clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam) and their penicillin-derived components. Bactericidal activity was assayed and morphologic changes were monitored for selected strains exhibiting a large inoculum ef...

Susceptibility of the Bacteroides fragilis group in the United States: analysis by site of isolation.

An ongoing survey of the susceptibility of the Bacteroides fragilis group of bacteria was continued at New England Medical Center in 1984 and 1985. A total of 1,229 strains were obtained from eight centers in the United States. These results were compared with those for 1,847 isolates tested in 1981 through 1983. The most active beta-lactam drugs were imipenem and ticarcillin-clavulanic acid (T...

In vitro activities of MK-0826 and 16 other antimicrobials against Bacteroides fragilis group strains.

The activity of MK-0826, a new carbapenem, against 309 Bacteroides fragilis group strains was investigated and compared with that of 11 other beta-lactam and 5 non-beta-lactam agents. MK-0826 showed excellent activity (MICs ranged from < or =0.06 to 4 microg/ml). The new carbapenem may be useful in the treatment of mixed anaerobic infections involving B. fragilis group strains.
